YEAR THREE UPDATE (w/ blood tests attached)
37 (38 next week) year old male.
Symptoms tracker:
GONE (or so rare now they’re effectively resolved): IBS,Sacroiliitis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Roaming painful joints, Disorganized cuticles (though nails are intermittently brittle), Chronic right shoulder/ribcage pain, needing to be adjusted every week. Brain fog very rare now, better concentration.
Intermittent/improving: Drowsy after eating a big meal (usually family parties, “bad” foods I don’t normally choose), anxiety (still pretty nasty waves of this periodically, maybe every few months), insomnia and wakeups at night (recently seem to be breaking through on this), Frequent nighttime urination (2-3 times usually. This comes in waves and on a couple of occasions in the last year I’ve gone all night). Eczema is almost completely gone now, after it got insanely bad early 2024 on the backs of my hands for most of the year (I’ve posted about this with pictures). Trouble focusing eyes, disorientation with hard cardio, heat or exertion – this has been massively improving lately since getting on B12.
Still present: Cold hands/feet, low free T (though total doubled from last year). Teeth are still a bit sensitive. Had a nasty cavity in my wisdom tooth and just got it pulled recently.
The biggest changes from last year to now are:
Blood retinol finally dropped! From 53 to 30!
My total testosterone more than doubled from last year, back up to my 2017 levels! Yet, SHBG is higher than ever and free testosterone is still quite low.
The addition of B12 has been doing some nice things for me. The problem with my vision had gotten quite bad, and started to affect me even with the moderate exertion I do at work. Seeing this turn around has been amazing.
ED- All I will say is this year I’ve finally now become quite convinced that I’m on the cusp of a massive recovery with this problem and just need a little more time. The drop in my blood vA and rise in my testosterone is very encouraging and I think that in another year or two things are likely to get better, possibly better than they’ve been in my entire adult life. I’ve seen this pattern with the eczema, anxiety, insomnia, etc, where some things just have to get much worse for a while before they get better and then go away completely. It has started to show fits and starts of improving. This also seems to have been affected by the B12 addition, but it really changed the most when I was doing 2,000 mcg injections every other day. So either I just need a LOT, or the results with B12 are just very inconsistent for whatever reason.
Detox waves still happen. Like recently my belly button, which was apparently holding onto a big batch of retinoids, decided to release them into my lymphatics, and I got eczema on my belly button for a week, and itchy throughout my trunk and insides of my arms. 2 weeks ago I had a terrible bout of anxiety. Shit still happens, healing always takes way longer than we want it to but we can see the changes over the very long term.
This continues to be the most amazing health experiment of my life. I can see I am slowly fixing all the problems I brought on myself from the massive dietary and supplement blunders I made in my 20s. I feel like I’ve really got a good diet grooved in. I don’t have to be terribly strict all the time, though I never mess with heavy hitter carotenoid foods. I can drink alcohol now if I want and not get a hangover that lasts for 2 days (if I even do feel rough in the morning, I’m good to go by an hour after waking).
Physically, I’m getting stronger but not really training particularly hard or different. Recently I ran a sub-7 minute mile. I just became suddenly more explosive in my pull-ups and am very close to my first ever muscle up.
I recently took a break for a month or two from high dose niacin, but I’m going to get back on 1-2g per day and continue to run that consistently. It will cause a little minor eczema here and there but it’s not too bad. Also going to experiment with some different forms and doses of B12 and folate.
